Life Assessment: How to Get Clear About What You Want in 2025
The start of a new year is the perfect time to hit the reset button, reflect on where we’ve been, and create a vision for where we want to go. But if your year is off to a bumpy or even just “meh” kind of start it might be time to take a step back and get a clear picture of you current state and map out your priorities. This is where the Wheel of Life comes in – and trust me, it’s a game-changer.
What is the Wheel of Life?
The Wheel of Life is a powerful tool used by coaches and personal development experts to help people assess where they currently stand in key areas of their life. Think of it as a snapshot of your life in 8 different categories – almost like an audit that shows you what’s thriving, what needs attention, and what may be holding you back from living your best life.
The Wheel is typically divided into 10 sections, each representing an area of life:
Health & Fitness
Relationships
Environment
Family & Friends
Recreation
Spirituality
Finances
Creativity
Personal Growth
Business and Career
Each section is rated on a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 means you’re not satisfied with that area at all and 10 means you’re totally rocking it. You then fill in each section based on your rating, and boom – you get a visual map of your life that shows where things are in balance and where they might need a little TLC.
Why Should You Use the Wheel of Life?
Let’s face it: life can get busy. We juggle work, relationships, health, finances, and everything else – often without really checking in with ourselves to see how we’re doing in these key areas. Over time, one area might start to take over (hello, work-life imbalance), while others get neglected. And while certain areas may take priority in each chapter, The Wheel of Life helps you zoom out and see your life in a holistic way, so you can make adjustments and bring more balance, fulfillment, and happiness into the year ahead.

2. Rate Each Area
Grab a pen and take a moment to reflect on each area of your life. On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate your satisfaction in each of the 10 categories? Be honest with yourself, and don’t hold back – this is for YOU.
1 = I'm totally dissatisfied, like, it needs a complete overhaul.
10 = It’s absolutely thriving, I couldn’t ask for more.
Anything in between = Well, that’s where things get interesting! What needs improvement? What’s working well?
3. Visualize Your Wheel
Once you’ve rated each section, fill in the corresponding slices of your Wheel of Life or draw a line from each of your scores to the other. The more filled-in a section is, the more satisfied you are in that area. It will help you visually see which areas are out of balance or need more focus.
4. Reflect on Your Results
Take a good look at your wheel. Are there any areas that feel flat, empty, or “wobbly”? For example, if your Health & Fitness section is a 4 but this is an area that really matters to you right now, it might be time to set some health goals. If your Finances & Wealth section is a 6, maybe you want to focus on budgeting or saving more this year.
This is your opportunity to identify what feels off-balance and create an action plan to move forward with intention.
5. Create Your Action Plan
Now that you know where you stand, it's time to get into action mode. Choose 2–3 areas you’d like to improve or focus on this year. Create specific, achievable goals for those areas. For example, if your Relationships & Social Life section is lacking, your goal might be to reconnect with friends once a month or join a new social group.
Remember: Focus on progress, not perfection. Small changes can lead to big results over time.
6. Track Your Progress
The beauty of the Wheel of Life is that you can use it as a tool throughout the year to track your growth and adjust your goals as needed. Revisit your wheel quarterly or at least every few months to see how your ratings have changed. Are you moving toward a more balanced life? If not, it’s okay to pivot and reassess.
